PEMBROKE LADIES 4 FISHGUARD LADIES 0
Pembroke Ladies hockey team resumed their Pembrokeshire League fixtures after the Christmas break by playing host to Fishguard Ladies on the Astroturf at Milford. Pembroke took to the field knowing that they would face a very determined Fishguard side. Pembroke took control from the whistle, putting their opponents on the back foot and were unlucky not to open the scoring early on when the Fishguard goalie saved well from Jackie Cadogan. Fishguard counter-attacked and had three short corners in quick succession, but good defending by Pembroke made sure that these chances came to nothing. From then on, Pembroke took control of the game and had Fishguard pinned in their own half. From a short corner, Jackie Cadogan got in behind the defence and her pin-point pass found Jane Wheeler, to give Pembroke the lead. Pembroke's midfield of Jenny Cadogan, Catherine Owen, Jackie Cadogan and Sian James dominated and linked well with forwards Jane Wheeler and Carys Jones, together with Nadia Lawrence, who was making her debut in the squad. Pembroke's total domination saw wing-back Tasha Lawrence and Hannah Thomas (making her full debut) attacking strongly down the flanks. From this pressure, they were awarded another short corner which resulted in Jenny Cadogan dodging three Fishguard defenders and rifling home her shot to give her side a 2-0 lead at half-time. The second half started in the same fashion, with Pembroke attacking strongly and Fishguard defending with their normal do-or-die attitude, which made it difficult to convert the chances created. From one of their attacks, however, Pembroke were awarded a penalty flick (a bit spooky - maybe Bernie can tell the future after all!), which Jenny Cadogan converted to increase the lead. Fishguard continued to work hard and tried to counter-attack when possible, but good defending from half-back Julia Griffiths and sweeper Brenda Scourfield meant that Victoria Scourfield in the Pembroke goal was not troubled. The game petered out in the last 10 minutes, but Pembroke continued to work hard for each other and a lovely move down the left-hand side saw Jane Wheeler cross for Sian James to hammer home. All the girls wish Kathryn Frazer a speedy recovery and hope to see her back training soon. Team: Victoria Scourfield, Brenda Scourfield, Tasha Lawrence, Hannah Thomas, Julia Griffiths (capt), Sian James, Jenny Cadogan, Catherine Owen, Jackie Cadogan (vice-capt), Jane Wheeler, Carys Jones, Nadia Lawrence. Coach - Bernie Wheeler. PEMBROKE U18S 7 TENBY U18S 0 Pembroke's Under 18s played against Tenby Under 18s last Thursday, under floodlights on the Pembroke Astroturf. Pembroke fielded a team of experienced under 18s, together with some girls aged 14 and 15 making their debut. Tenby started the better of the two teams and had more possession in the middle of the pitch, but failed to create any scoring opportunities. Pembroke awoke from their slumbers and started to believe in each other and create and play some lovely hockey. From this point, they dominated the whole game, running out 7-0 winners. Tenby never gave up and can take heart from their performance, but they were always under pressure from a totally dominant Pembroke side Pembroke Under 18s team: Victoria Scourfield, Hannah Thomas, Laura Scott, Nadia Lawrence, Catherine McNally, Catherine Hunter, Catherine Owen, Sian James, Rosie McBride, Rosie Hill, Carys Jones, Hayley Preece.
