On a beautiful sunny day, Tenby Ladies hockey team played their final league game against Fishguard with the knowledge that they were already Pembrokeshire League champions and the result was immaterial.

Nevertheless, Tenby hoped to end the season on a high note, but from the start their opponents had other ideas.

During the first 15 minutes Fishguard had all the play, with Tenby's defence of Annie Lindsall, Jean Campbell, Michelle Johns and Sarah Cooper having to work extremely hard.

Tenby conceded a penalty stroke and the goalkeeper showed her class with a fine save. This seemed to galvanise Tenby into action, and it wasn't long before Julie Jones hit one of her scintillating shots from the edge of the circle which Pauline Roberts deftly converted when the Fishguard 'keeper failed to clear.

Ten minutes later, after some end to end play, Tenby were awarded a penalty corner which Julie converted with a little help from Miriam Brown.

Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to settle them, as Fishguard replied with a breakaway goal to make the score 2-1.

There then came a sustained period of pressure from Tenby, with shots from Kate Morris, Lucy Higgon and Mandy Lewis all tantalisingly close.

Just before half-time captain Barnie Squire hit a shot on goal, with Pauline being first to take advantage after a rebound off the 'keeper, to make it 3-1.

As coach Dave Miller was umpiring, he was unable to give his customary half-time pep talk, so Barnie took on this role, and it must have worked as after just four minutes of the second half Tenby got their fourth through an individual effort from Kate.

But once again Fishguard replied straightaway, making the score 4-2.

During the last 20 minutes, the spectators were treated to perhaps the best of Tenby hockey, with flowing movement and accurate passing. It was the open hockey that all hoped to witness.

Annie Rossiter, ever the busy centre forward, passed the ball to Mandy who scored Tenby's fifth. Mandy then had a chance to score again when Tenby were awarded a penalty stroke, but it was not to be as the Fishguard 'keeper made a fine save.

But Mandy wasn't to be denied when Tenby were awarded a penalty corner which she slotted home after passes from Barnie and Kate.
