Narberth 10 pts. Tonmawr 33

Guaranteed third place before the match started, the Otters lacked the commitment, determination and hunger which was apparent in the Tonmawr team from the outset, as the Green and Whites demonstrated why there is a gap of 20 points between the two sides in the league.

The match ended the Narberth season in Division One West, but Tonmawr still had a game in hand. Already certain of second place behind the champions, Carmarthen Quins, the Green and Whites still had a game left with a re-arranged fixture against Llangennech.

The Otters started strongly with an excellent try by centre Steve Martin after 11 minutes as he combined cleverly with winger Nick Jones running up the right touchline for a try which was not converted.

However, it soon became clear that celebrations would not be the order of the day in the Narberth clubhouse after the match as Ton scored twice before half-time.

Powerful lock Hywel Davies forced his way over for a try set up by his colleagues in the pack and outside-half Steve Lewis weaved his way through for a try under the posts. Lewis converted both tries.

In the second half, the Narberth resistance fell away with some slip-shod defensive work and handling errors. Tall Tonmawr winger Ryan Bayliss crossed for a brace of tries to take the game out of sight in the opening stages of the second half. The first try was created by centre Dave Tieutti and converted by Steve Lewis.

To compound matters, replacement winger Micky Evans crossed for an unconverted try with virtually his first touch of the ball and the Otters were down and out.

Narberth number eight John Tennick did have the consolation of a late unconverted try, but it was a downbeat end to what had been a generally fairly successful league season for players, coaches and supporters.

Forwards' coach Sean Gale gave his verdict on proceedings after the match. He said: "It was very disappointing. We did OK in the first half, but the performance in the second half was totally unacceptable. We fell off too many tackles, a number of individuals were below par and, although we looked good with the ball at times, we were too sloppy in our overall play.

"Players must have a long hard look at themselves and we have to pick ourselves up for the Pembrokeshire Cup Final against Whitland in 10 days time."

He ended on a more positive note by saying: "We are still third in the league and have had a reasonably successful season.

"We scored over 70 tries, which was an average of more than three per match, but on the minus side we are also leaking easy tries."

Narberth scrum-half Adrian Killa was nominated man-of-the-match by the match sponsors.

The Folly Farm Balcony Suite was sponsored by the Colby Collection Centre and the Templeton Supporters were the Otters Holt match sponsors.

The match ball sponsors were Peter Barrett and Mr. and Mrs. Terrell.
