Sir,
What planet does Tenby Town Council inhabit, when stating that the cinema element in respect of South Terrace Properties Ltd would appear to be unviable?
The Cinema Exhibitors' Association Ltd states: 'From an historic high immediately post-war of 1.64 billion in 1946, UK cinema admissions gradually declined to an all-time low of just 54 million in 1984. Since that time, the advent of the multiplex, and record levels of investment in improving the theatrical experience (still ongoing), have seen admissions recover such that since 2000, they have remained (sometimes significantly so) above 150 million. What's more, UK monthly cinema admissions have noticeably increased between 2005 and 2012, from 164,666,563 to 172,498,775.
Even discounting alleged residential indifference to the idea (via a small non-statistically analysed online poll), Tenby is a year-round resort that needs tourism to thrive.
Wet weather + visitors + no Woolworth equivalent = distressed families. The lack of a cinema (+ bowling) venue in a seaside town is laughable, at a time when few holidaymakers can afford to add to their expenses by driving to Carmarthen or Haverfordwest for entertainment.
Edna Greenhalgh,
Tenby.
