Taylor triumphs
at Trefloyne
In atrocious conditions, quite unbelievable after the glorious weather of the previous week, Sean 'Chatterbox' Taylor easily took the honours with a hard-earned 35 points at Trefloyne last Wednesday. His victory is even more applaudable, as this was only his second appearance with the society. Great stuff buddy.
Considering several absentees from our usual golfers, the turnout was magnificent with 20 hardy - if not silly - men ready to play. Starting time of 10 am arrived and these 20 golfers, suitably attired in 'wet suits', assembled at the first tee ready to get the show on the road. The hooter sounded and off we went.
The first trio, 'an all Narberth affair' of Roy 'Specs'Taylor, Paul 'Value' Marsden and Steve 'Eleanor' Rigby, stepped up to the plate to strike the first ball down the fairway. I 'see' that the new 'specs' did not do you much good Tays! and Paul, may I suggest the driving range before the next fixture!
The much vaunted fourball of Mark 'Woody' Wood, Tim 'Mystery Man' Davies, Darrell 'Smoothie' Jones and Mark 'Skids' Brindley were next off and lived up to their top seed rating by easily winning the 'Best Team' prize, with each of them shooting good points.
Following 'Woody' and his band of bandits, was his Daddy Barry 'Chippy' Wood, Kelvin 'Curtains' Boughey and Barry 'Scales' Avery. The less we say about their round the better, except, keep practising!
Next to tee-off, eager to prove their worth, were Richard 'Neptune' Davies, Glyn 'Semi-colon' Jones and Dominic 'Gatecrasher' Marsden. Welcome to KGS Dom, how about giving big brother some lessons! Well done Glyn, at last a 'Major Trophy'.
The penultimate group to step up to the plate consisted of Wyn 'Sherpa' Hopkins, Peter 'Sombrero' Hughes and Anthony 'Wiseguy' Ryan. For once Peter was not in the prizes, but a satisfactory outing for the three.
The last team, a fourball, included the brothers Lewis - Rick 'The Righteous', of Narberth, and Marti (the young one), on holiday from the Emerald Isle, playing alongside Sean 'Chatterbox' Taylor and Wynne 'Abacus' Richards. Sean had a winning round, followed closely by the 'local' lads. Unfortunately, Marti was unable to complete the course and was forced to return to the clubhouse for a dose of 'Black Gold', which seemed to work the oracle as he quite chirpy when we joined him!
After the usual pre-meal refreshments, we retired to the dining room for food, and, for once, everybody was delighted with their repast. Back in the bar, Barry did the raffle and then handed over to Mark for his address. He thanked the players for their continued support, Trefloyne for hosting the day, the caterers for the fabulous food and Graham 'The Bar' for his wit and hospitality. He then presented the prizes as follows:
Third place went to Glyn Jones with 31pts, in second place was Tim Davies with 32 and the winner was Sean Taylor with 35. Congrats mate.
Over 20 handicap went to 'Sherpa' Hopkins; nearest the pin - 'Skids' Brindley; longest drive - 'Wiseguy' Ryan. The 'old geezers' prize was won by 'Smoothie' Jones. Wooden spoonist was the one and only 'Value' Marsden - keep practising.
The winning team was 'Woody' Wood, 'Skids' Brindley, 'Mystery Man' Davies and 'Smoothie' Jones. The only yellow ball to be returned was by winners 'Neptune' Davies, 'Semi-colon' Jones and 'Gatecrasher' Marsden - you jammy so and sos.
Before concluding, it was announced that the venue for next month's fixture had not been decided upon, but will once again be on the usual second Wednesday of the month (November 9). Further bulletins will appear in this journal prior to the date.
Have a good golfing month. Remember, fewer shots make more points.
