A group of 20 stalwarts braved the inclement conditions at Glyn Abbey Golf Club for this month's outing. After coffee and bacon rolls, the teams were reorganised due to the non-arrival of a couple of players. The teams were as follows: Pat 'Postie' Casement, Tim 'Gavel' Davies and Barry 'Chippy' Wood; Keith 'Luke' Warmington, John 'Scribe' James and Mark 'Woody' Wood; Wyn 'Lob Wedge' Hopkins, Phil 'Sheepskin' Rugg and Lee 'Long-Shot' Lewis; Windsor 'HRH' Royall; Adrian 'Lightning' Alman and Roy 'Scooter' Good. Teeing off the 10th were two fourthsomes: Arwyn 'The Dwarf' Thomas, Darrell 'Ex-Rods' Jones, Alan 'Dunhill' Chapman and Trevor 'Santa' Lewis; Gary 'Compo' Hopkins, Rick 'Megane' Lewis, Richard 'Nelson' Davies and Glyn 'Cleggy' Jones. Initially the weather was not too bad. However, by the halfway mark, the rain was a steady downpour. This was too much for 'Nelson', who retired to the warmth of the clubhouse; he had more sense than the rest of us! It became difficult to keep a grip on the clubs - several flew further than the ball! Nevertheless, there were some very good scores and one wonders what they would have been in dry conditions. Several players commented on the number of drainage ditches on the course; they seemed to act like magnets to the ball, as did the numerous trees. Luckily the showers were piping hot and we adjourned to the 19th, refreshed and ready to do justice to the excellent meal. Results were as follows: Individual winner was Tom 'Gavel' Davies with 36 points. In second place was Pat 'Postie' Casement, also with 36 (worse back nine). On 35 points, Lee 'Longshot' Lewis was in third place. Well played. Best OAP, with 31 points, the ever-young Barry 'Chippy' Wood - he plays better with rain on his glasses! An excellent drive by Wyn 'Lob Wedge' Hopkins - no, he did not use his lob wedge for this one - won him the nearest the pin award. An even more impressive drive to win the longest drive, was that of Alan 'Dunhill' Chapman - it must have been over 300 yards. Chippy took great pleasure in presenting the wooden spoon to yours truly for a miserable 21 points, the second time I've had it on this course - remember the ditches! Two players managed to get 2s, Pat 'Postie' and Lee 'Longshot'. Team prize was won by the first off group, Pat 'Postie', Tim 'Gavel' and Barry 'Chippy'. Thanks were given to the ground staff for a well prepared course and, to the restaurant staff for a lovely meal. Thanks also to Imperial Garage and Heatherton for donating prizes for the raffle, and to Barry for organising the trip. The venue for next month has yet to be finalised.
