A good turnout of 24 members travelled to Cardigan GC for this month's meeting. The weather was kind and the course in very good condition despite the recent rains. Four groups of three teed off from the first. These were: Terry 'Snowy' Harvey, Glyn 'Shots' Jones and Darrel 'Ex-Rods' Jones; Gary 'Harpic' Hopkins, Rob 'Willy' Wilcox and Adrian 'Lightning' Allman; Roy 'Scooter' Good, Barry 'Chippy' Wood and Mark 'Woody' Wood; Richard 'Nelson' Davies, Wyn 'Gasoline' Hopkins and Ken 'Drains' Badham. Those teeing off the 15th were: Rick 'Megane' Lewis, Richard 'Tiger' Davies and Bernard 'Boom Boom' Bradley; Lenny 'Long-shot' Lewis, Mike 'Scrubs' Burke and Alan 'Pipe' Chapman; Trevor 'Santa' Lewis, Gareth 'Goa' Phillips and Frank 'Anon' Simmonds; Steve 'Ali G' Oulsman, Arwyn 'The Dwarf' Thomas and John 'Scribe' James. For the first hour or so, the going was relatively easy, then the wind began to strengthen and drives were finding the wrong fairways! It is strange that when one allows for the wind, the ball goes in a straight line, in the wrong direction. However, a fine round was had by everyone, apart from 'Drains', who ran into difficulties and did not finish the round. 'The Dwarf' had the misfortune to lose a couple of balls on the fairways - must have found their way down some of the many rabbit holes. He was not a happy bunny! Took him three or four holes to calm down. After a couple of thirst-quenchers at the bar, we set off for The Angel to enjoy a delicious meal, thanks to 'Woody', Wendy and staff. Time for the serious business of prize-giving. Overall the scores were not quite as good as expected - the handicapper must have been cutting on the heavy side! On his debut with the society, Alan 'Pipe' Chapman scored 37 points to take first place - well done Alan, your handicap will not be so good next time. In second place was, Lenny 'Long-shot' Lewis with 36. The OAP prize went to Barry 'Chippy' Wood, winning by a better back nine from Darrel. However, Darrel 'Ex-Rods' Jones unleashed a fine drive on the 16th to win the nearest the pin award. The longest drive happened to be into the teeth of the wind, down the 14th fairway. Most of the big hitters failed to find the fairway and the prize went to Rob 'Willy' Wilcox, who managed to keep it long and straight. Team prize went to the trio of Lenny 'Long-shot' Lewis, Alan 'Pipe' Chapman and Mike 'Scrubs' Burke - congratulations on a fine team effort. Finally to the prize that no one wants to win, the wooden spoon. This month's recipient was Richard 'Nelson' Davies. Prizes were also presented for the best round from last year. In first place was Gareth 'Goa' Phillips - well played Gareth; runner-up was Rick 'Megane' Lewis - well done Rick; and, in third place was Darrel 'Ex-Rods' Jones - good one Darrel. Thanks to the staff at Cardigan and The Angel for an excellent day's golf; also to Woody and Harpic for their organisation. Next month's outing is due on February 14 at Newport, Pembs.
