KILGETTY 4 ANGLE 0

It has often been repeated in life that 'you only get out what you put in' and football, being such a great leveller, is frequently indicative of this.

So it was only fitting that Kilgetty walked away with the three points from this division two encounter, despite not reaching the heights they are capable of, and they can now go into a difficult New Year period with a brace of comfortable victories under their belts.

Three players stood out in particular, and the remaining 11 all pulled together, to overcome a resolute Angle side, but for a long while the home team made hard work of what should have been a more comfortable result in a gentle winter clime.

For the time of year, the spacious village pitch was in pretty good condition, with plenty of lush green areas on top of a firm surface to play some neat football on. The centre circle did cut up a little, but the flanks were more than appetising to the purist's eye and Angle set out their stalls to compete by closing down the Kilgetty midfield, playing some easy balls and trying to catch their opponents on the break.

However, 'The Stroller' Mansbridge was his usual simply efficient presence and he was perfectly complemented by the consistent Michael Scale.

Both players dictated the pace of the game by protecting their defence and making intelligent runs and probing passes to spur their colleagues in attack.

The principle difference, though, was the distinguished performance of 'Lovejoy' Griffiths, whose name is so often associated with the words 'tireless', 'running' and 'effort'!

As always, he ran his socks off for his home village, tackling back to assist the midfield and turning lost causes into goalmouth incident with his cheetah-like pace and quick thinking.

One of the downfalls of this Kilgetty side, though, which may be allayed to the proliferation of youth, is that if their endeavours do not produce early results, they tend to lose their shape, much to the chagrin of team boss Alan Hurst.

So, after a handful of near misses early on from Tommy James and Dwain Rossiter, plus a superb point blank save from the Angle 'keeper, Kilgetty disappointingly found themselves trying a little too hard at times and frequently catching their own team-mates out of position.

Thank heavens, though, for the steadying influence of both Bobby Bevan and Paul Mansbridge, whose ageing legs covered as much ground as those half their age, and they were always on hand to give and receive simple balls.

With their insistence of doing the elementary things well, Kilgetty eventually breached the Angle resistance early in the second half when 'Lovejoy' found himself clean through on goal and he coolly slotted the ball past the 'keeper, into a welcoming net.

From there on in the villagers gained a greater sense of control in the match and Ollie Griffiths completed a deserved hat-trick of well-taken strikes, each one deceiving the opposition and gently nestling into the bottom corner of the nearside goal, after his pace had taken him clean through on each occasion.

The 'piece de résistance', though, came from a move which involved the dominant players in the middle of the park and was sublimely finished by the ever-impressive Michael Scale, with the deftest of left foot chips over the advancing'keeper and the ball finding its almost natural home in the top corner of the old onion bag.

This moment of magic set the seal on three inspiring individual performances and was the third of four valuable goals, which, more importantly, earned three precious points for an improving village team.

At the end of the day, the scoreline was just about accurate and the efforts of 'Lovejoy', Scale and 'The Stroller' meant Kilgetty got the result their combined endeavours deserved.

Kilgetty fielded: Phillips, Bevan, Bessant, Prout, Griffiths, Jones, Mansbridge, M. Scale, Tommy James, Rossiter, Griffiths. Subs - Thorne, Watts, Lewis.

HUNDLETON U13s 0

KILGETTY U13s 9

A superb display of controlled football won an exciting encounter at Hundleton last Saturday. This has always proved a difficult fixture for Kilgetty at this level and the visitors were under no illusions that this game would be any different.

For the first 20 minutes it could have been anyone's game as both teams kicked off playing good one-touch football and only good defending kept the score-sheet blank.

Hundleton are renowned for their gritty no nonsense approach and caused problems in the Kilgetty defence. Adam Morgan had his work cut out at sweeper and Geraint Thomas, Paul Hodge and Sam Foster all had to scramble the ball away from the goalmouth in the opening quarter.

The difference in the two sides became apparent as the game went on and Kilgetty's midfield started to create openings for the front players. Jack Bevan plugged away, putting through Dan and Rob Colley on goal. Rob Whitfield and Josh Bevan showed some lovely skills, threading their way through the Hundleton defence.

The stalemate was broken after Dan Colley picked up a Jack Bevan through ball inside the home box. His determination and strength saw him break two tackles and fire home.

Whitfield and Josh Bevan continued to cause problems up front and Colley latched on to a pin-point cross from Whitfield for 2-0. Rob Colley made his mark on the game as he weaved his way across the goalmouth and struck a powerful shot into the top of the net.

Goal of the game was a real cracker. Jack Bevan picked up a Geraint Thomas pass 30 metres out. He saw the 'keeper off his line and fired the ball into the air with pinpoint accuracy to land the ball into the net. Dan Colley found the net once more after Paul Brookes put him through to complete his hat-trick and send his team in 5-0 up at half-time.

Kilgetty remained in control throughout the whole of the second-half and although 'keeper Dean Morgan had to stop a couple of on-goal attempts from Hundleton, the back line of Foster, Thomas Hodge and Adam Morgan kept the home side at bay.

Rob Colley, Rob Whitfield and Josh Bevan continued to create chances and Dan Colley converted another three to take his tally to six. Clarke Williams came on in the half and made his mark when he put through Josh Bevan on goal who converted with a thundering shot past the home 'keeper.

Another emphatic win for Bobby Bevan's squad.
