Jerry Swift, of Neyland, raised £3,124 by successfully completing the Caledonian Challenge in April by crossing Scotland by kayak! One of six paddlers and the only entrant from Pembrokeshire, Jerry crossed the 92 kilometres from Fort William to Inverness across three major lochs in a small kayak and met some severe weather conditions en route. Fortunately, Nessie kept out of the way as the group crossed Loch Ness! Jerry's training from his time in the Marines paid off, and together with some of his friends from the service, they prepared well for the endurance feat and helped the more novice participants to complete. Now working with Can (offshore) at Chevron, Jerry is pleased that the sponsorship generously given has far exceeded his original estimate He said: "We chose WAA as it is a vital life-saving service that anyone in our community could benefit from at any time. Grateful thanks go to The Ferry Inn, Hazelbeach, Sinclair Garage, Can (offshore) Ltd., St. Ishmael's School, and 42 Commando, Plymouth, plus friends, family and all others who sponsored me. I particularly want to thank my wife Janice for her constant support." Hilary Harvey, accepting the funds for Wales Air Ambulance at the Ferry Inn, Hazelbeach, last Friday, said: "Jerry is very modest about his superb accomplishment and the figure of 3124 is incredible. It will probably save three lives, as it will pay for three Golden Hours where the patient is treated promptly and reaches the right surgeon within that first critical hour after an accident. Thank you Jerry and all those who have sponsored you. "The fact that so many sponsors opted for the Gift Aid option means that this figure will increase significantly as 28p in the pound is claimed back. We are very lucky in Pembrokeshire to have people who will give so much time and energy to our charity."
