Last Saturday, Whitland travelled to the capital to face Rumney who languish in the bottom fur of division one and after a competent performance by the whole squad, came away with a convincing 50 points to 10 victory, scoring eight tries along the way.
Rumney's outside-half, Adam Harding, missed an early penalty chance in the 10th minute, before Whitland opened their account with a try by flanker John Bowen, this resulting from a lineout 30 metres out, when a good catch and drive set up a rolling maul for Bowen to claim the score. Outside-half Eifion Roberts added the conversion.
Rumney hit back with an unconverted try by fullback Michael O'Neil.
After 26 minutes, Whitland's young second row, Carwyn Davies, was sin-binned for preventing Rumney taking a quick tap penalty. After some four minutes after his absence, Rumney took the lead with a nicely worked try by second row Michael Kelly, following a neat move, with most of the 15 players involved; again this was unconverted.
In the 34th minute, Whitland re-took the lead with a fine individual try by outside-half Eifion Roberts. From a scrum 30 metres out, number eight Randall Williams picked up the ball, went blind and passed on to scrum-half Andrew Jenkins, who fed Roberts, to jink his way over for a well-worked try. This went unconverted.
In injury time, Whitland's pack again showed their strength, with Williams again picking up at the base of a scrum and driving for the line. His back row colleagues John Bowen and Stuart Tirie were in support and when the front five added their weight, they drove over for the try, which Stuart Tirie claimed. Roberts added the conversion, to leave the half-time score 19-10.
Six minutes into the second half, young centre Matthew Hughes went over for an unconverted try after good recycling work by the pack and nice hands by the backs.
At this point, Whitland started to make the changes, with Jason Evans and Romeo Colella coming on in the front row for Dafydd Lewis and Dai Jones.
Ten minutes later, Gareth Williams replaced Wayne Higgon and with the front row settling, coach Dominic Setaro used the remainder of the substitutes, with Ricky Davies coming on in the second row for Carwyn Davies, Phil Morgan and Johnny Koloi coming on in the back row for John Bowen and Stuart Tirie and Aled Davies replacing Eifion Roberts at outside-half.
Whitland then built up a head of steam, with the presence of fresh legs and their all round fitness proving too much for Rumney, as the Borderers ran in four tries in the last 15 minutes.
The first came in the 69th minute when, after a good break and run from the halfway line, winger Jack Tremlett threw a long pass inside for replacement Phil Morgan to go in unopposed. Davies added the two points from the conversion.
At this point, Rumney's fullback Michael O Neil took offence at a refereeing decision, and after an outburst, the official was left with no alternative but to red card the player.
In the 74th minute, after a half-break by Aled Davies, Lee Glanville was on hand to crash through some weak tackling for Whitland's sixth try, again Davies adding the conversion.
Some three minutes later, Andrew Jenkins pounced on a loose ball, broke down the blindside, kicked the ball long and the young flyer, Emyr Davies, making his first appearance for Whitland, outpaced Jenkins and Rumney's defence to touch down for another unconverted try in the corner.
Whitland rounded things off three minutes into injury time with a try by winger Jack Tremlett, who went in under the posts, outside-half Aled Davies bringing up the 50-point mark with the conversion.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Whitland have no fixture, due to the start of the Six Nations tournament, but next Wednesday sees the local derby clash with Narberth at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn, kick-off 7.15 pm.
