Sir,

I read with interest, in last week's Observer, the report of Soroptimist International Tenby and District's visit to the Torch Theatre to watch a one-man play about Lloyd George.

In this report it was stated that 'Lloyd George's last home in the village of his birth, Llanystumedwy, Gwynedd'. Now, according to Chambers Biographical Dictionary (1996 edition), Lloyd George was in fact born in England, in Manchester, and moved back to Wales, with his mother, when he was two-years-old. Of course it is indisputable that he spent most of his life in Wales, but it could be argued, by reason of his place of birth, that the great man was English!

Incidentally, I also learnt (ref. Google), that John Prescott (now Lord Prescott of course) was born in Wales, in Prestatyn, and lived there for four years before moving to England. This led me to wonder whether the Principality might consider claiming his Lordship's nationality?

Just a thought.

Clifford Hall,

Pentlepoir.
