The fifth annual AJO Memorial took place over the past two weekends. The 36-hole event is held in memory of Arthur Ormond, former managing editor of the Tenby Observer as well as captain and president of Tenby Golf Club. On Saturday, June 16, 157 competitors took part at Trefloyne GC and there were 151 at Tenby for the second leg. The weather was surprisingly kind on both days, although a stiff breeze blew across the Tenby links. As in previous years, members of the home club enjoyed the better scores in both legs, but for the first time, a Trefloyne member was victorious in the AJO Bowl. As reported last week, Trefloyne members dominated over their testing parkland layout. Unfortunately, the leader at the halfway stage, young Sam Anderson, was unable to play at Tenby as he was on holiday in France. Most of those who were in contention following the first 18 holes were unable to sustain their challenge. Similarly, those who scored best at Tenby had not really figured amongst the leaders at Trefloyne. At Tenby, the winner was Mike Hale with an excellent 39 points, very nearly double his score at Trefloyne. Gavin Field-Thomas and Andrew Morton (both 38 pts) and Bill Beynon (37) were eight, nine and 10 points, respectively, better than they were the previous Saturday. Bill Davies (35 and 34) pipped Tenby colleague Terry Morgan (39 and 30) for third place thanks to a better back 18. Runner-up was John Broomhead with two rounds of 35 points, but the winner of the AJO Bowl for 2007 was 16-year-old Dan Edwards, of Trefloyne, with 35 points at his home club, followed by 36 at Tenby, for a very creditable aggregate of 71. In the 'gross' competition, Chris Thompson, who is very familiar with both courses, claimed the Tenby Observer Cup with 32 and 30 points. Tenby's Richard Morton was second. Young Georgia Thomas, of Tenby, was the runaway winner of the Ladies Section. She was victorious in both legs, with scores of 38 and 40 points, respectively. Despite being just 13-years-old, this was the second time Georgia has won the AJO Bowl. Trefloyne members, Michelle Richards and Julie Jenkins, were second and third, with another junior Emma Guerreiro in fourth place. The leading scores were as follows: First leg at Trefloyne: Sam Anderson (Tref) 40 pts, Martin Yates (Tref), Terry Morgan (Ten) and Mike Ansell (Tref), 39, Scott Roberts (Tref) 38, Gerald John (Tref) 37, Richard Morton (Ten) 36, Dan Edwards (Tref), Simon Evans (Ten), John Broomhead (Ten) and Bill Davies (35). In the Men's Section, the longest drives were won by Chris Thompson at Trefloyne and James Maxwell at Tenby, while the nearest the pin prizes were awarded to Dylan Lawrence and John Gillespie, respectively. The Ladies' longest drive winners were Michelle Richards and Georgia Thomas, while their nearest the pin awards went to Heather Morgan and Emma Guerreiro. Footnote: Lists of those who won prize vouchers are currently displayed at both Trefloyne GC and Tenby GC.
