On St. David’s Day, ‘Jemima’ (a near 80-year-old Morris 8 hp car) was in St. Davids for the street market in the city square.

During the morning, the Bishop of St. Davids drew together a crowd and gave a St. David’s Day blessing to the city. He came down from the Market Cross and immediately came over to ‘Jemima’, where he blessed a bunch of daffodils for the regiment at Brawdy, with a prayer asking to keep them safe in the troubled times we live in.

On Wednesday, March 2, ‘Jemima’ and Simon Moffett went to the Cawdor Barracks with Dai Davies. They presented the bouquet of daffodils to Lt. Col. Mark Stoter, who is the commander at the base and the 14th Signals Regiment who are based there. He accepted the daffodils on their behalf as witnessed also by Clr. Wynne Evans, chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council.

In return, Lt. Col. Mark Stoter presented them with a shield from the regiment to take to Mametz, underlining the importance of keeping the memory of those brave men who served and fell in the battle of Mametz Wood 100 years ago this July.

During St. Davids Day in the market, Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru had a very friendly reception and their buckets took donations. ‘Jemima’ turned out for the first time with daffodils on her headlights and attracted a lot of attention, despite the cold wind.

“We continue to find that many people who we talk to are either ignorant of the facts about prostate problems or at the other extreme have experienced the problems first hand with themselves or close family members,” said Simon Moffett.

These were the first steps for a journey in July when Simon Moffett and Stuart Churcher will be driving ‘Jemima’ to Mametz, to attend the commemoration service at the memorial to the Welsh soldiers who fought and fell there as part of the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago this year.

The Battle of Mametz Wood July 7 to 12, 1916, was part of the Battle of the Somme, where the 38th Welsh division attacked and took the wood. During the battle, there were almost 4,000 casualties. On July 7, there will be a ceremony at the Dragon memorial at Mametz to remember them and the families they left behind.

Jemima is a Morris 8hp which will be 80 years old by the time of the run, and her progress can be followed on Facebook: JemimagoestoMametz.

Brian Harries, chairman of Pembrokeshire Friends of ProstateCymru, said: “We are very excited by this event as it also provides support for Prostate Cymru.”
