NEWS anchorman Jamie Owen returns to his native county next week to promote his new book 'Magic Harbours' with a series of book-signing sessions. On Tuesday, he will be at Tenby's W. H. Smith between 3 and 4 pm and Tenby Bookshop from 4-5 pm. Published by Gomer Press, the book is the diary of Jamie's voyage around the coastline of Wales, which is currently being documented in a BBC Wales television series, 'Magic Harbours'. Complemented by glorious photography by local freelance photographer, Martin Cavaney, the book is a celebration of a beautiful country and its dramatic coastline. While his feet will be on terra firma next week, Jamie is no stranger to the sea. Growing up in Pembrokeshire, he and his brothers Huw and Richard spent their childhood on the water, messing about in boats on the river Cleddau. Their clapped-out outboard motor made them proficient early rowers. But for this voyage, he travelled in an altogether grander vessel, a 100-year-old Bristol Channel pilot cutter, as he visted Cardiff, Barry, Port Talbot, Swansea, Mumbles, Tenby, Milford Haven, Landshipping, Dale, Fishguard, Aberaeron, Aberdovey, Pwllheli, Caernarfon and finally Conwy . "We had a very warm welcome from the communities we visited," said Jamie, who also passed his home town of Pembroke Dock along the way. "This series puts at centre stage those communities who are on the edge of Wales." From shanty singers in Mumbles to a ship's pilot guiding super-tankers in Milford Haven, Jamie embraced the chance to meet colourful characters along the way. "The focus is the people who live and work in the harbours of Wales, and we discovered simple, captivating stories."
