A young Pembrokeshire boccia player has been picked to train with the Great Britain squad.

Fourteen-year-old Jacob Thomas, of Bethesda, who already trains with Welsh Boccia Academy, has been invited to attend the next GB Boccia Training Camp in Sheffield this month.

The idea behind the camp is to spot talented players early, with the possibility of including them in the World Class Programme working towards London 2012.

Although Jacob, who attends Ysgol y Preseli, has only been playing boccia for four years, he has already represented Wales on several occasions and was Welsh championship runner-up last year.

Based on boules, boccia was originally developed for those with cerebral palsy, but is now played by people of all abilities and disabilities.

So popular has it become in Pembrokeshire that there are now two clubs - the Young Voices and Crymych Panthers - plus several 5x60 school clubs and an estimated 30 players.

"This is an outstanding achievement for a youngster and shows that Jacob is already a top class sportsman," said Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for sport.
