Sir,

I have just read Mr. Rigby's brilliant letter (Observer, April 23) suggesting that two yellow lines next to the kerb be used to prevent illegal parking, especially in areas of the town which become congested due to the selfishness of drivers who so do.

Although Mr. Rigby's idea is an excellent one, it would never work; imagine how difficult it would be to re-educate the drivers who are seemingly drawn to using these yellow lines - nigh on impossible I would say.

Also, I think someone has thought of his idea before, as in a later edition of this 'paper (June 4) the powers that be are pleading their case for not employing another traffic warden - lack of funds. Looking from my lounge window at the top of High Street at any time of the day we can see the equivalent of one week's wages in fines if enforced against the perpetrators of this crime.

Also, it would be wise to employ people from out of town to do this job as familiarity breeds in this case (or job) 'a blind eye'!

Incidentally, it is now 11.30 pm on Saturday and underneath our window is a car without a blue badge which has been here since 2.15 pm this afternoon on double yellow lines on the narrowest part of the High Street opposite Handicott greengrocers.

We have also noticed an increase in taxis picking up fares in this area using the width of the road at the top of Crackwell Street as a turning circle. This is resulting in even more young men using the garden area at the side of the Candy as a toilet. Still it's a change from watching football.
