As we were going to press yesterday (Thursday), Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed they had investigated the opening of an historic landmark in Tenby.

St. Catherine's Island has been publicised on a social networking site as being presently open to any member of the public who wants to visit and take advantage of the panoramic views and scenery between tides, although the fort remains shut at present.

Proposals to turn the island into a new visitor attraction, providing exhibition and storage space, food and drink, and retail uses, were refused by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority's development management committee in July.

Members of the committee had been unable to carry out a site visit onto the island, which sits next to the resort's Castle Beach, due to health and safety concerns.

A spokesperson for the county council confirmed that an initial inspection in relation to the opening had not 'raised any obvious safety concerns'.
