AN exhibition by David Begley, 'The Three Legged Race', opens today (Friday) at the Queen's Hall Gallery, Narberth.
David is a young Irish artist who trained in Dublin and in West Wales School of Art, Carmarthen.
This series of drawings using charcoal and acrylic washes is part of a body of work which includes a film, and is based on the figure and its relation to the surroundings. Also, how mundane objects can represent a presence or an absence of a figure, and how marks and tones can describe a place, a time, a possibility.
A common thread in these works is the couple bound at the ankle. The idea of a couple bound at the ankle making a three-legged race to a ringing phone began as an idea for a short film.
This has various possibilities of meaning. Are they so in love they wouldn't wish to be separated? Are they tied down, restricted? Is their bond a supportive one or just a crutch? Are they independent or co-dependent?
These strong, beautifully crafted drawings ask many questions, and again the Queen's Hall Gallery has managed to stage a highly original and interesting exhibition.
The exhibition is on until October 4 and open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am -5.30 pm, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays unless there is a meeting on. Please 'phone to check on access if travelling on these days. Tel. 01834 861 212.
