Pembrokeshire is a world class venue for coastal walking, kayaking, kitesports, coasteering and climbing. It is so good that it was recently voted the second best coastal destination in the world for 'Sustainable Tourism' by National Geographic.

To ensure that the pressure from outdoor recreation is sustainable for the wildlife, people, landscapes and habitats of Pembrokeshire, a 'Marine Code' has been developed.

The 'Pembrokeshire Outdoor Charter Group', PCNPA, CCW, POMH, Visit Wales, South Wales Regional Tourism Partnership and others have now funded an Activity Liaison Officer (ALO) who works with anyone who uses the coast to help raise awareness about the wildlife, ownership and management of the coastline.

Working as part of Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, the ALO facilitates regular meetings between activity providers, conservationists and land owners; promotes best practice for outdoor activities and represents the outdoor recreation sector both within Pembrokeshire and nationally through Wales Activity Tourism Operators and other national meetings.

The new ALO is Alun Richardson. Alun is no stranger to Pembrokeshire having lived and worked here for 20-plus years. He has spent all his adult life working and playing in the outdoors, from teaching outdoor education and field studies to being an international mountain guide climbing around the globe.

After writing nine books on mountaineering, he told us why he took the job: "The combination of wildlife scenery and adventure makes Pembrokeshire a national treasure for outdoor enthusiasts. I wanted to play a part keeping it a special place to play and work."

He has worked as a 'technical advisor' to many centres in South and West Wales and a safety advisor to PCNPA. Alun has returned to Pembrokeshire after three and a half years in Ireland working as the training officer for Mountaineering Ireland.

With a passion for adventure in 'wild places' and an advocate of low impact adventure, Alun is looking forward to working with all outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor activity and wildlife businesses to promote sustainable adventure along the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline.
