Sir, Sitting on the sidelines, we expatriates care for Tenby and know a large number of people who looked forward to holidaying there. Most now say that they have had enough; some have already written to the Observer and gone into print. But it would appear that they are all wrong. We are assured that there are no marauding drunks in the town emanating from the licensed premises, no disgusting behaviour and no noise. There is no evidence of damage to buildings or cars; for seven days a week Tenby behaves as it used to on an olden-day Sabbath. Well not quite. It would appear that we need to close down the chip shops (and other take-away establishments). We have the assurance by one of the councillors that it is their customers who cause all the troubles. Perhaps someone will explain to us why hours in a bar bring about sobriety, while going for chips brings on a alcoholic haze. Yet another councillor could not understand why someone didn't agree to an extension of the licence for the De Valence when such an extension would sober up even more chip seekers! Could it be that the councillor is a licensee? Please, readers, support the inspector and thank him for his views.
Ivor Jenkins,
