Narberth 10 pts. Bonymaen 14
After winning their first match of the season away at Bridgend, Narberth's players and supporters would have been forgiven for thinking this could be a memorable year for the Lewis Lloyd outfit, yet after Saturday's narrow home win against Bonymaen, the opposite could prove to be true.
Disposing of Bridgend may have proved to be a bit of a false dawn, for the Brewery Field team has suffered the sporting equivalent of a Britney Spears meltdown considering their past glories and it can be easy to hit someone when they are down.
That being said, this was a much-improved performance by the Otters and it took a last minute converted try in injury time to secure defeat from the jaws of victory. The fact there was 10 minutes of injury time played didn't wash well with the home team's supporters, but as manager Robert Lewis said: "It was the same for both sides."
The plain truth is, it wasn't the last minute try that spoiled the home team's party, it was the fact they haven't got a regular kicker and they missed three attempts at goal. In three games they have missed nine kicks and when a game is as tight as this was, they have to be taken.
The visitors got off to a good start with a converted score after seven minutes when Chris Hoppe sped through the middle to score under the posts. Outside-half Ian Brooks made no mistake with the conversion and from here on in to the interval, the visitors had the better of the game.
Narberth did have their chance to shine in this half, the highlight being Tom Bonnell's run down the right wing after a break out from inside their own 22.
It was a good run and deserved better, but all he got for his troubles was a reckless tackle by opposite number Hoppe, who up-ended him in the tackle and dropped him on his end. This may have been common practice back in the old days, but in modern times it is frowned upon with such contempt that the resulting mêlée instigated by Narberth's pack could very well have been justified. Hoppe was sent packing for the first yellow of the game. Shame then that Narberth lock Chris James was sent for a 10-minute break too for starting it all.
A few minutes later and Narberth were down to 13 after skipper Richard Davies was sin-binned for handling in a ruck. Fortunately, Brooks missed the penalty and Narberth were still in the game.
As inconsistent as the home team were in the first half, the opposite was true in the second. They hit their lines harder, punched through the visiting defence and were rewarded after a piece of smart handling by Matthew Davies fed the impressive Johnny Morgan under the posts.
Nick Jones converted and the scores were level.
A period of stalemate ensued which led up to the moment the game turned on its head. Bon lock Richard Brooks went down injured and it was deemed severe enough for him to be stretched off.
This held up play for a considerable amount of time. The confusion reigned from the fact the clock on the scoreboard kept ticking, but the referee's had stopped. He calculated that 10 minutes needed to be added on, the home team faithful were not too sure.
Narberth made a raft of replacements and they all did their job, the fresh legs adding impetus to an already improved performance.
Davies added a drop goal to his conversion and they led by three. The crowd pressured the referee to call time, he didn't and in the final minutes, the visitors raced into score under the posts, with Brooks converting Alan Powell's try.
Manager Lewis was more philosophical about the time added on than the supporters and added that his team could and should have won the game.
"This was a vastly improved performance compared to recent weeks and, although we are disappointed to lose another home game, we stuck at it and should have won.
"I thought there was less time added on than there was, but it is the same for both sides and we were pipped at the end. Maybe next week it will be us that scores the winning try in injury time. That's the way rugby goes."
