Lives are being put at risk because of illegally parked vehicles in Tenby, it was claimed this week.

Drivers who contravene parking regulations in the town's Crackwell Street are now facing £30 penalty fines or having their vehicles towed away by police who are cracking down on the problem.

In addition, officers are also urging local residents to be 'more thoughtful' about their parking after an ambulance with a casualty on board failed to pass vehicles parked illegally near the 22 Steps last week.

"The police feel such motorists are placing people's lives at risk by parking their vehicles in such a manner," Sergeant Gary Jones, of the town's police station, told the Observer this week.

"We are concerned about such indiscriminate parking; we will be paying particular attention to the area and are urging residents to give a little more thought to their parking," he continued.

On this occasion, an ambulance failed to get through, but Sergeant Jones is equally concerned that other emergency vehicles could also be held up.

"In the event of a house fire, the fire engine would most definitely fail to get through," he said.

"We have spoken to the occupiers of the nearby premises and they have been suitably advised by police, but their vehicles have since remained parked at the same location," the officer pointed out.

Sgt. Jones warned that if a problem arises again any offending vehicle will be reported, a £30 fixed penalty ticket issued and if it is causing an obstruction and the owner cannot be traced, it will be towed away at the expense of the owner.
