One of Tenby's premier fund-raising efforts starts next week (May 15) and the organisers hope to beat last year's record collection by a hefty margin. Christian Aid week will feature a special lunch, a concert, lunchtime recitals of classical music, coffee mornings and various collections around the town. Sue Bonser, treasurer of Tenby Christian Aid committee, said: "People here have a platinum record for giving to starving people in the Third World. We're very proud of them. "We break our record for fund-raising nearly every year, and as the troubles of Africa, South America, India, and other places grow, so does the willingness of people in the town to help out." She added: "Everyone from far and near will be warmly welcome at all our events - and we hope they'll support hungry children and adults to the hilt." The week begins with a coffee morning at the Salvation Army Hall on Tuesday, May 15, followed the next day by a similar event at St Johns Church. Both events start at 10.30 am. May 15 also sees an 8 pm concert at St. Mary's Church, starring the award-winning Tenby Male Voice Choir and guests (admission £5). The church is also the venue for lunchtime recitals on Thursday to Saturday, starting each day at 1 pm. Also, collections will be outside or in various churches in the town during the week. Anyone kind enough to help with these collections, who've not already registered, is asked to ring Malcolm Stacey on (01834) 843485. Tenby Christian Aid's ever-popular buffet lunch will be held the following week at noon on Wednesday, May 23, at St. Johns Church. Tickets are £6 each. But you don't have to attend any events if time presses. Just hand over something at the door or call at 9 Crackwell Street with your donation. "The appalling struggles of people in developing countries may seem a long way from Tenby area," said Sue Bonser. "But we're all set to do our bit."
