Pembrokeshire County Council has had to carry out emergency repairs to one of the main roads into Tenby after it deteriorated in the hot weather.

The surface of a section of the A4218 known as Broadwell Hayes - between Serpentine Road towards The Green - began breaking up and the council was concerned about its integrity.

Work on resurfacing the road began on Tuesday.

The road has remained open and traffic management has been via stop and go boards. Pedestrian access was maintained at all times.

Clr. Rob Lewis, the authority's cabinet member for highways and planning, said: "It is very regrettable that we have to carry out this work on one of the busiest roads into Tenby at the start of the school holidays, but we really have no choice.

"It would not be in the interests of safety to leave repairs until September. We are committed to carrying out the work as quickly as possible.

"We did consider the option of mechanically removing the surface for the time being, but this would leave an unacceptable running surface over the main summer period."

Clr. Lewis said that the road was completely resurfaced in 2001 and last surface dressed in 2009.

"There is no doubt that the recent spell of extremely hot weather is responsible for the deterioration of the surface," he added.

FOOTNOTE: Up until Monday, Tenby's weather recorder Trisha Putwain reports that since July 5, there has been no rain in Tenby, sunshine has been in double figures and temperatures in the 20s most days.

"Highest maximum so far was 29.2 on the 14th."
