Beach cleaners at Freshwater West received something of surprise recently. For among the flotsam and jetsam was a tag from the famous vessel ‘Hannah Boden’, featured in Hollywood blockbuster, The Perfect Storm.
The tag, which had travelled over 2,990 miles across the Atlantic to the Pembrokeshire beach, was found by Keep Wales Tidy project officer, Mari Williams, during a beach clean with the Darwin Centre and Manorbier School as part of the Ocean Motion project.
Imprinted with the name ‘Hannah Boden’, a famous New England fishing vessel featured in the film The Perfect Storm starring George Clooney, it was used to identify lobster pots on the east coast of the USA.
The tag has caused a stir not only for its famous association with the Hollywood blockbuster, but because mysteriously all its corners have been cut off, baffling the local fishing community.
Mari Williams was keen to get to the bottom of the mystery, so contacted The Atlantic Red Crab Company who own the Hannah Boden.
“It was exciting to find a tag from such a famous ship, but also baffling as to why the corners might have been cut off,” she said. “We hope that The Atlantic Red Crab Company will get back to us and help piece the puzzle.”
• The Ocean Motion project is a partnership between Darwin Centre, Keep Wales Tidy, the Ocean Sole Foundation, Kuruwitu Conservation and Welfare Association, Manorbier VC School and Broad Haven School.
