A HOLIDAY home for children set up in memory of 13-year-old Ieuan Thomas-Yendle, who passed away of an undiagnosed illness, is set to be officially opened next month in Tenby.
The Ieuan The Lion Holiday Home in Kiln Park has been set up by the memorial fund charity for Ieuan, of Newport, who passed away in 2007.
"Ieuan spent many happy holidays in Tenby and we have lots of special happy memories that we hold on to which we hope other families will experience too with the introduction of the new holiday home," explained Ieuan's father Wayne Yendle, trustee of the Ieuan the Lion Memorial Fund.
In 1995, Ieuan was diagnosed with Hypogammaglobulinemia (CD 40 Lygand Deficiency) which is a rare immune deficiency of the blood.
"As you can imagine it was a lot for a young child to cope with, but Ieuan did; it was part of his life and as long as he had his treatment and medication and it kept him well he got on with it, smiling singing and dancing and doing all the things he loved," said Wayne.
"The family has gone through a lot of grief, but we have turned the negative into a positive by setting up Ieuan the Lion Memorial Fund which was established in April 2009.
"We have raised over £60,000 since registered and the charity has now achieved its first objective by purchasing a holiday home especially adapted for disabled children.
"The idea behind the holidays and experiences is to provide opportunities for the children and their families to escape illness and the clinical sterile atmosphere of hospitals.
"We are working closely with Ty-Hafan Children's Hospice and LATCH which is connected to Sky Ward at the Children's Hospital in Cardiff to provide holidays for the children who are disadvantaged by disabilities and life-limiting illnesses and their families to help to create special memories," added Wayne.
The official open day of the launch of the Ieuan the Lion Holiday Home in Kiln Park, is at 3 pm on June 4.
