SOUTH PEMBS HC 3
UWIC 1
The first league game in South Wales Division One hockey league saw South Pembs. carry on in the winning form that they ended last season in this Pembroke Patio Design sponsored match.
Tim Lounds scored South Pembs.' first within 10 minutes with an individual effort, running some 30 yards through the UWIC midfield and striking the ball into the goal at what seemed an impossible angle.
However, this was cancelled out with a penalty corner goal from UWIC some five minutes later.
South Pembs.' second came from a move down the right from Nigel Thomas who in finding Wheeler in midfield saw a decisive run from the captain that put 'Monkey' Kendrick into a shooting position in the UWIC circle, resulting in a devastating strike that left the 'keeper stranded.
Simon Moseley was a rock at sweeper, with Dave Miller making an all-important save just before the interval so that the home side ended the half 2-1 up.
South Pembs. continued to dominate the game from the start of the second-half. Smith was strong up front and was unfortunate on several occasions not to add to the scoreline.
Despite several short corners and a back of the stick save from the UWIC 'keeper which was unseen by the umpire, it was not until halfway through that South Pembs.' third was scored. Robbie Woods took a long corner which was moved around the midfield and with Smith putting a deflection at the goal, Kendrick finished off by placing the ball past the 'keeper on the far post.
There was an excellent performance from Huw Hannaford, making his first appearance for the 1st XI, taking over the left-half position vacated by his brother who has returned to university.
Team: D. Miller, S. Moseley, S. Irving, N. Thomas, A. Stear, R. Woods, B. Wheeler (capt.), T. Lounds, H. Hannaford, S. Kendrick, J. Smith.
Umpire: Jane Wheeler FIH.
BRIDGEND 4
SOUTH PEMBS. A 0
South Pembs. 2nd XI travelled to Bridgend for their first league game with a side that was weakened by the absence of many senior players due to work commitments and unavailability because of the early start of 12 noon imposed on them.
Skipper Sean McCarthy was unavailable due to family illness and Dave Ferguson stepped in to deputise.
South Pembs. saw themselves 3-0 down within 15 minutes as they had virtually arrived at the pitch for the start of the game.
Once the team had settled down they were unlucky not to pull back a couple of goals, but with the Bridgend 'keeper in fine form it was not to be.
With fine defending and impressive goalkeeping from new goalkeeper, Jason Kenniford, South Pembs. can build on their second-half performance.
Team: J. Kenniford, D. Ferguson (capt.), P. Morris, J. Evans, J. Moore, C. Harrison, P. Lewis, T. Ferguson, A. Hendrick, N. Beynon, A. Makin.
Umpire: Keith Edwards.
