Tenby Ladies had a fantastic start to the 2009/2010 season by winning the annual Pembrokeshire Cup Tournament.

The friendly pre-season tournament is held as a warm up event for all teams in Pembrokeshire.

For the first year ever, all teams in the county participated, and the beautiful weather drew spectators and supporters from all parts.

Tenby's first match was against the current league winners - Fishguard. It was a close game, with some fine play from both teams. However, Tenby scored the only goal with a fantastic sweep into the net from Mandy Lewis.

Tenby's confidence was on the rise, and they were ready to take on Milford. The Tenby midfield players dominated the game, marking the Milford attackers closely, and the one and only break that Milford made for goal was stopped with flying save by goalkeeper Annie Lindsell.

Mandy Lewis secured a second goal and a win for Tenby, taking them safely through to the semi-final round.

Tenby faced their old rivals Pembroke in the semi-finals. However, within minutes, they were one-nil ahead with a goal from centre forward Sophie Treacy.

Tenby continued to attack and kept the Pembroke defence busy, but several short corner attempts were stopped on the line by goalkeeper Vicky Scourfield.

The second Tenby goal was scored by youngster Georgia Lewis, who managed to strike the ball in mid-air into the back of the goal.

The final whistle blew, and Tenby were through to the final against favourites Haverfordwest.

The Tenby players knew this would be a difficult match, and the defence knew that they would be kept busy and would have to be on top of their game.

A fast and furious pace was set by both teams, with the Tenby midfield players finding themselves playing a more defensive role than they had done in the previous matches.

Attacking opportunities were grasped and both goalkeepers were kept busy, with some superb match-saving dives.

With 10 seconds remaining, Haverfordwest were awarded a short-corner. However, their strike was stopped and cleared off the line just in time for the final whistle.

The result was 0-0 and this meant that the tournament winner would be decided by penalty flicks. Tenby knew they had a fighting chance with Annie Lindsell (Welsh veteran international) in goal.

When Tenby won the toss, Annie chose to defend first, forcing Haverfordwest to take the first flick. Annie saved three out of four attempts, and Sophie Treacy, Rachel Davies and Mandy Lewis were all successful for Tenby.

This resulted in victory for Tenby, securing the trophy for the second year running. There were outstanding performances on the day from Rachel Davies, Annie Lindsell, Rhianne Griffiths and Miriam Brown.

All teams enjoyed the tournament immensely, and thanks go to Brenda Scourfield and Julia Griffiths for their hard work in organising the event.

Tenby Ladies would also like to thank the members of Tenby Round Table for their generous donation to the club, and for their annual pre-season challenge hockey match, which resulted in the usual battering!
