Sixteen years ago, a brand new concept was created by Pembrokeshire's Sports Development team. The team invited aspiring female footballers to a 'try out' day at Pennar Robins FC - and enough came to form a league. The league flourished, with two divisions at its zenith and a good number playing for Wales. There was also an excellent county ladies team, which remained unbeaten by any Welsh team over 10 years. However, ladies' senior football has seen a decline in recent years, although the junior game is still thriving. As a result, sport leaders are aiming to revitalise the senior game with a new initiative which will amalgamate teams from Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Carmarthenshire. This new combination will be called the West Wales Women's League and the administration will be carried out by the existing West Wales Junior girls' league committee. History was therefore repeated on Sunday when Sport Pembrokeshire organised another 'try out' day at the superbly prepared Pennar Robins FC, in preparation for the launch of the new league in September. Six new teams turned up to take part in the day, including Clarbeston Road, Haverfordwest, Neyland and Kilgetty. One of the original organisers 16 years ago, and the organiser of the day was Sport Pembrokeshire/ FAW football development officer Gerry Rigby. Gerry said: "We are delighted at the turnout of teams today. The whole point of the day is to ascertain exactly what interest there is in this new league. The day is therefore a rehearsal for what will become a new West Wales League." The secretary of the existing West Wales girls league, Steve Hammett, said: "I am really pleased and encouraged by the enthusiasm and quality demonstrated by the players. "If there are any other teams or players who would like to take part in this new exciting league, then call either myself on 01792 456711 or Gerry on 01437 776379."
