Felinfoel 22 pts. Narberth 81

After a series of disappointing results, the Otters ended their losing run with an amazing 81-22 win away to Felinfoel.

A total of 13 great tries, supplement by eight conversions from Aled Davies, had statisticians scratching their head wondering when - if ever - Narberth had reached a higher total in a league match.

It was the day that all players, coaches and the faithful supporters had been waiting for when everything clicked into place with scintillating running rugby of the highest quality. Foel were not to be left out of the pictured either, with three tries and a total of 22, which very often is enough to win a league fixture.

Throughout the match, the visitors broke clear of defenders with superb skill and pace, imaginative running, good team work with someone always appearing in support, the reduction in general errors, good discipline coupled with some quality kicking out of hand by Aled Davies who varied his tactical approach in an innovative manner.

Deft positional kicks resulted in a number of tries with the ball not being kicked too hard and a quite brilliant grubber kick, timed perfectly to set up one of four tries scored by Steve Martin.

It is rare in any match for one person to score four tries, but on this occasion there were two players to reach that figure with Nick Jones also enjoying a four try bonanza.

Although all but one try was scored by the free running backs, the try by lock Alex Jenkins will long in the memory as well.

He started the move with a Shane Williams style dummy, raced up the right touch line and inter-passed with winger Nick Jones before throwing himself over the line to score a try to tell his grandchildren about in 40 years time!

Winger Tom Bonnell scored twice after kicking off the try scoring spree with great support work to go over in the right corner and added another in the left corner for goods measure.

Steve Martin also bagged a first half brace, with the other tries coming from Nick Jones, and Roger Davies.

Foel started strongly in the second half, but the Otters turned the ball over near their own line and then switched play to the other end of the field which Steve Martin finished with a try converted by Aled Davies.

Foel still bounced back with a tries by winger Elliott Dawe and centre Simon Stoneham one of which was converted by Luke Marsh who also converted a try scored by full-back and captain Andrew Burder later in the match.

For the Otters, Nick Jones had a second half hat-trick of tries, Steve Martin added another to his opening try, scrum-half Adrian Killa also scored try number 98 in Welsh league rugby to get within touching distance of the magical 100 tries.

Each of the eight conversions in the match was converted by Aled Davies.

Head coach Sean Gale was delighted with the win and the way it was achieved.

Speaking after the match, he said: "It was a fantastic win, following the recent barren spell when we have been unlucky with a series of narrow defeats, some by just one point.

"It was a great all round team performance as the forwards were outstanding clearing out, full-back Roger Davies was very good, and centre Steve Martin was unbelievable, while outside-half Aled Davies orchestrated play and varied his game.

"The back row all played well. Jim Kaumahotoya was everywhere and carried well, Lewis Wood tackled hard and did the donkey work at number eight and Wayne Williams provided the general support."

On being asked the reason for such a massive win, he added: "We have been training hard and we clicked today. The highest number of points conceded by Foel previously this season was 50 points against Bridgend.

"Two weeks ago Felinfoel defeated Corus. They are not a bad side, but when we got into the red zone we scored tries. All things missing in recent games clicked in this game."
