The Rotary Club of Tenby's Junior Young Musician contest of 2012 was held recently at St. Johns Church, Tenby. This year, due to refurbishment work in the main church building, the contest took place in the Church Hall, and it was standing room only for the large capacity crowd, who were treated to eight excellent performances from the young and accomplished contestants.
The young musicians from Tenby Community Junior School, St. Teilo's Catholic School and St. Florence School who participated were Ruby Duckworth (clarinet), Becky Vickery (euphonium), Molly Ashton (flute), Elizabeth Stewart-Walvin (flute), all Tenby Junior School, Olivia Tomp (flute), Leo Zanato (piano), Megan Bridges (clarinet), all St Teilo's Catholic School, and Bibi MacDougall (clarinet), St. Florence School.
The adjudicator was head of performing arts at Ysgol Greenhill School, Mr. Paul Rapi, who warmly congratulated all the contestants on what they had achieved, going on to say that they had all performed at a very high standard, comparable with that which was required for GCSE oral examination, and that he was delighted to see such a rich stream of talent that would be coming up to Greenhill School, and further that they would all be very welcome additions to the renowned Greenhill School Orchestra!
Unfortunately, though, there could only be one winner and, after his deliberation, Paul announced he had chosen Olivia Tomp, of St. Teilo's School, for her playing of the flute, and warmly congratulated her on her success, whilst also stressing his congratulations to all the contestants for the standard they had achieved - sentiments clearly echoed by the appreciative audience.
Olivia was presented with the Charles and Audrey Roberts trophy, and a smaller replica to keep, by Rotarian Alan Jones, president of the Rotary Club of Tenby. Olivia and all the other contestants were also presented with vouchers by president Alan on behalf of the Rotary Club
During the recess for the adjudicator's deliberation, the audience was greatly entertained by Tenby Junior School Choir, who sang a selection of songs in both Welsh and English, including a medley of Second World War favourites, accompanied by Mrs Miranda Davies on the piano and led by Mr. Alan Evans, which was warmly appreciated by the audience.
Following the contest, bouquets of flowers were presented by pupils, Bibi MacDougall, Megan Bridges and Molly Ashton on behalf of the Rotary Club to their respective music teachers, Mrs. Beth McMann - St. Florence Junior School, Mrs. Margaret Blackledge - St. Teilo's Catholic School and Mrs. Miranda Davies - Tenby Junior Community Schoo, to thank them for once again fully supporting the competition as they had done since its inception
The club would once again like to thank the elders of St. Johns Church for hosting the contest, the contestants, the accompanists, the adjudicator, Mr. Paul Rapi, and, of course, everyone else who contributed towards the success of the evening.
