There was a high standard of bowling at Fishguard and Goodwick Bowling Club on Saturday when the finals of the Pembroke County Bowling Association's championship competitions were keenly contested. The event was formally opened by Mr. Ted Didcote, current president of the Pembroke County Bowls Association, who congratulated all the competitors on winning through a number of preliminary rounds to reach the finals, and wished all the participants good luck and good bowling. The competitions commenced at 10 am and there was continuous bowling on the green until approximately 6.30 pm. The competitors and spectators enjoyed beautiful sunshine throughout the day. The green was in first class condition and was bowling at a good pace. The ladies of the Fishguard and Goodwick Bowls Club served meals and snacks throughout the day to competitors, officials and spectators, while the bar staff were serving beverages for those who required something a little stronger than tea or coffee. The Open Singles match was won by Craig Jones, of Haverfordwest BC, who beat Saundersfoot BC's John Baggott 21-8. The Open Pairs was won by John Roberts and Phil Carpenter, of Saundersfoot BC, who beat last year's champions Craig Jones and Richard O'Leary, of Haverfordwest BC, 26-12. Saundersfoot also clinched the Open Triples, with Don Poole, David Poole and Stephen Poole seeing off the challenge of last year's winners, Peter Day, Andrew Muskett and Pat Currie, of Tenby BC, 20 -10. Whitland claimed the Open Rinks when Tim Thomas, Alan Whitehouse, Mathew James and Chris Court beat Graham Hughes, Gareth Hughes, Myrddin Dennis and Stephen Poole, of Saundersfoot BC, by 27 shots to 20. In the Over 60s Singles, John Moffatt, of Saundersfoot BC, chalked up a 21-10 victory over Alan King, of Neyland BC. Tenby's Terry Preston and Roy Powling beat Peter Collins and Ron Grant, of Milford Haven BC, on the last end to lift the Over 60s Pairs 21-19, while in the Mixed Pairs, the holders, Cally Jones and Steven Reese, of Whitland BC, retained their title by beating Cynthia and Ken Edwards, of Pembroke Dock BC, 23-18. In the Under 18s Singles, Jason Dixon, of Haverfordwest BC, beat Lee Power, of Milford Haven BC, 21-10. Craig Jones, of Haverfordwest BC, won his second title of the day when he defeated Saundersfoot's Gareth Hughes 21-10, to take the Under 25s Singles, while in the Under 35s singles, two of the youngest competitors on the day, Louis Price, of Whitland BC, beat his friend and near rival, Ryan Thomas, also of Whitland BC, 21-18. Before presenting the trophies and badges to winners and runners-up, the county president, Mr. Didcote, thanked the ladies of Fishguard and Goodwick Bowls Club for the excellent refreshments which they had provided throughout the day. He also thanked the bar staff, the markers, the umpire and especially the greenkeeper, Mr. Mike Power, who prepared the green to a very high standard. The hon. secretary of the Pembroke County Bowls Association, Mr. Gerard Thomas, reiterated the thanks to all who had been involved in making finals day so successful. He especially thanked the officers, committee and members of the Fishguard and Goodwick Bowls Club for their splendid hospitality, and concluded by thanking the hon. competition secretary, Mr. Arthur Jarvis, for organising the competitions in this his first year in the post.
