The subject of the pastor's talk was Peter's miraculous escape from prison. James had been killed in a wave of persecution and Peter was to be next. He was released by an angel at the last minute, after eight days of well-guarded imprisonment. The members of the early church were all in prayer but they were not expecting a miracle. When the servant girl found Peter at the door, her excited news took some believing.
Terry Waite said "You can no more release a man from prison by prayer than tell an apple to stop falling from a tree."
However, the late Dr. A. C. Dixon of the Metropolitan Tabernacle observed: "When we rely on organisation, we get what an organisation can do; when we rely on education we get what education can do; when we rely on eloquence, we get what eloquence can do, and so on. Nor am I disposed to undervalue any of these things in their proper place. but when we rely on prayer, we get what God can do."
