The long and prestigious story of Pembroke will finally be told thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to Pembroke 21C Community Association. The award of £50,000 will fund a project to be centred on the concept of the stories of Pembroke and its people - its notable inhabitants and ordinary people, how they lived and worked, the buildings, streets and houses, and the way the town has developed from a mediaeval walled town to a popular 21st century tourist destination. The hub of the project will be a specially designed website which will pull all the different elements of the project together. This will provide a virtual museum covering the history, archaeology and geology of Pembroke as well as oral histories, research and information that will provide a resource for the community, schools and anyone interested in the heritage of Pembroke. Other important elements are the collection of oral histories and the stories of the houses and buildings of Pembroke's Main Street which will link history with art through a painted frieze of the street. The project was launched recently at an exhibition in St. Michael's Church during the Pembroke Festival telling the story of Pembroke's maritime heritage. Nikki Anderson and Linda Asman have been appointed joint project officers for the project which is being managed and hosted by Pembroke 21C Community Association in partnership with Pembroke Town Council, Pembroke Civic Trust and Pembrokeshire Museums Service. Commenting on the award, Gareth Jones, chairman of trustees for Pembroke 21C and Mayor of Pembroke, said: "We are all delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled us to begin this project at last. It will provide a fascinating focus for the whole community as well as an attraction for visitors to the town. There will be lots of opportunities for all ages to be involved in its development." Explaining the importance of the award, Jennifer Stewart, head of HLF Wales, added: "This is precisely the type of local community project that we look to fund. This project will allow local people and visitors alike to find out more about the important heritage of Pembroke and in doing so will create an invaluable resource for everyone who wants to explore this history."
