The Fairtrade mark is the only independent consumer label that guarantees a better deal for producers in developing countries, appearing on over 100 foods, including tea, coffee, bananas, biscuits, chocolate, cakes and honey products. In Tenby, Fairtrade products are already available in Somerfield and in the cafe at Tenby Leisure Centre. In conventional world markets, the price of commodities such as cocoa and coffee fluctuates dramatically, frequently dropping below the cost of producing them. This has had a catastrophic effect on the lives of millions of small farmers, forcing many into crippling debt and causing others to lose their land. Fairtrade means a new start, with crops bought directly from small farming organisations at a guaranteed price. Tenby can be a Fairtrade town. If any retailers or cafes and restaurants are interested in finding out more about stocking Fairtrade products, contact Anne Draper, Tenby 2020, on 845583.
