Tenby cut loose in nine-try demolition of Hendy
HENDY 7 pts.
TENBY UNITED 55
There was no let-up for home side Hendy in this Division Three West match on Saturday as Tenby United cut them to ribbons in a nine-try bonanza played in near perfect conditions.
For Hendy, it was a repeat of the first game of the season when they were thrashed by Kidwelly, while Tenby put in a greatly improved performance - what a difference a week makes!
Playing into the stiff breeze, all the various units within the team started to function straight from the kick-off and Tenby weathered the early home side pressure to take the lead on the 30-minute mark with a well-worked try involving Sion Brace and Justin Richards, who combined to put Dan Shooter over in the corner.
This score was the start of a period of prolonged Tenby pressure, with Darren Rees, Sion Brace, Richards and Phil Hughes all prominent, with hooker Hughes eventually crashing over for an excellent try, this time being converted by Neil Powling to give the United a 12-point advantage.
Hendy, becoming very frustrated with the continuous pressure applied by Tenby and lack of ball, resorted to strong arm tactics, which saw Daz Littlewood invited to take a 10-minute break by referee James.
The half concluded with the referee calling the two captains together in an attempt to cool things down.
Within two minutes of the restart, Tenby increased their lead when Darren Rees very cleverly kept the ball in play and linked in midfield with Sion Brace whose high kick was well fielded by the Hendy fullback who in turn was clattered by Paul Luger.
With Andrew Dennis and Chris James first to the breakdown, the ball was slipped to Justin Richards who crashed over under the posts for an excellent team try, converted by Powling.
From the restart, Hendy attacked the Tenby line, but a very well organised and disciplined defence stopped several rolling mauls. A resulting scrum on the line saw speedy flanker Andrew Dennis steal the ball from the Hendy scrum-half and run the length of the field to score an unconverted try in the corner to put Tenby in command and provide the necessary platform for the remainder of the game.
With the match well and truly lost, the home side were now only playing for pride and to their credit they put Tenby under considerable pressure for the next 15 minutes as they used their big pack in a series of drives and five-metre scrums.
From one of these scrums, however, Anthony Griffiths picked-up and charged through the tiring Hendy defence, gaining 40 metres to link-up with Sion Brace, whose probing kick was gathered by the supporting Paul Luger who went over unopposed under the posts. Neil Powling added the extra two points.
With Rob Thomas already on the field for the injured Mark Badham, coach Gareth Thomas brought on veteran utility forward Chris (Niffy) Brace, Nicky Guymer and Mark Stevens, and the changes made no difference to the dominance being shown by a rampant Tenby side.
From a lineout move straight from the training field involving Niffy, Ollie Brace and Justin Richards, the home side could do nothing to prevent Richards going over for his second try and with Powling adding the extra points, Tenby were 36 points to the good.
On a rare visit to the Tenby half, the home side scored, with outside-half Rees putting in a neat chip over the oncoming defence to grab a converted try under the posts.
If anything, this score galvanised Tenby back into life, with both Mark Stevens and Darren Rees testing the home side's defence to the full.
A score quickly followed when a cunning tackle and steal by Niffy Brace saw the ball spun out to Sion Brace, who chipped through a disorganised home defence and gathered at pace to go in under the posts for a converted try.
The next score quickly made up for the frustration clearly shown by Mark Stevens when after he had completed all the hard approach work he failed to make the line when he broke back inside to be cut down by the defence he had already beaten. This time Mark made no mistake and completed some excellent and quick ball transfer work by Nicky Guymer and Gene Hocking to cross wide out. Neil Powling failed with the difficult conversion and it appeared that Tenby had missed the opportunity to post a score in excess of 50 points.
In the dying minutes, however, the 50 mark was exceeded when a tackle and steal by the industrious Nicky Guymer saw Sion Brace round off an excellent and productive afternoon for both him and the team with a solo break and kick through for a try that was converted by Neil Powling - making it a well deserved 55-7 win.
After the game, coach Gareth Thomas was well pleased with the result, but was quick to point out that the opening games had been against two of the sides promoted from Division 5 West and that next week's game against Trimsaran, one of the sides relegated from the old Division 3 West, would be more of a real test as to what lay ahead for Tenby.
Having said that, he was also full of praise for his side who had shown a marked improvement in all departments from the opening game against Lampeter.
Tenby: Darren Rees, Gavin Brace (Mark Stevens), Neil Powling, Paul Luger, Dan Shooter, Sion Brace, Dylan Lawrence (Ollie Brace), Scott Payne, Phillip Hughes (Nicky Guymer), Mark Badham (Rob Thomas), Chris James, Gene Hocking, Justin Richards, Anthony Griffiths (Chris Brace), Andrew Dennis.
