A Pembrokeshire mental health facility has been recognised for their commitment to and support for carers and their families.
St. Non Ward in Bro Cerwyn Hospital, Haverfordwest, has achieved the Investors in Carers Bronze Level award; a scheme which is delivered by Hywel Dda University Health Board and supported by its local authority partners in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.
The Investors in Carers initiative is designed to help health facilities such as pharmacies, GP practices and hospitals focus on and improve their carer awareness and enhance the help and support they give carers.
A carer is someone, of any age, who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. Anyone can become a carer; in most cases becoming a carer is not out of choice, it just happens.
Pennie Muir, Investors in Carers regional project support manager for Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “It is great to see some very enthusiastic staff members who really want to make a difference to carers and the work they have undertaken within the Investors in Carers scheme.”
Clare Griffiths, occupational therapy technician, said: “Working towards the bronze level has highlighted the importance of the work we do and support we offer carers.
“We pride ourselves on our holistic approach here at St. Non Ward and will continue to look for new and effective ways to help our patients and their carers. We look forward to working towards silver!”
Gemma Hart, occupational therapy technician, added: “Just because someone is admitted to the ward it doesn’t mean their carer stops being a carer; they are still heavily involved with their relative’s or friend’s care and require our full support.
“Since becoming involved with the Investors in Carers scheme, and starting a carers group here on the ward, we have been able to network with other carer support agencies and ensure that carers are provided with the help and support they need.”
