Mid and West AM Simon Thomas has welcomed the return of a first aid summer service to Tenby but argues that it doesn’t go far enough.
In collaboration with St John Cymru Wales, Hywel Dda University Health Board has confirmed the first aid summer service will return to Tenby from today (Monday, July 18)
Party of Wales Assembly Member Simon Thomas said: “Plaid Cymru believes this is a welcome step in the right direction for the people of Tenby and the surrounding area.
“I held a meeting last year about problems with accessing GPs in the area so this would help matters particularly with the busy holiday season coming up.”
During Questions to the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Well-Being and Sport in the Senedd chamber, Simon Thomas AM quizzed the Cabinet Secretary on the future of GP and primary care services in the area.
The Mid and West AM asked the Cabinet Secretary Vaughan Gething for an explanation on why the Cabinet Secretary hasn’t supported making the experiment of re-opening the minor injuries unit in Tenby, which was opened over Easter, into something that is consistently available for the people of Tenby.
“The Cabinet Secretary assured me that the Government and the Hywel Dda Health Board were working together to ensure a more regular and sustainable service. Instead of working for a long-term strategy for the future of the GP and minor injuries unit in Tenby, we rely on the St John Cymru service for a short term period.
“The summer service will end on September 5 and we’re yet to see any longevity from the Welsh Government and Hywel Dda Health Board’s strategy – the people of south Pembrokeshire deserve better and I will continue to argue for a more sustainable and continuous service at Tenby Hospital,” Mr. Thomas added.
