Neyland Community School has won a Welsh Government Award for its work on the Food and Fun School Holiday Enrichment programme, keeping children, active, enthused and nourished over the summer.

The Food and Fun 10-year Celebratory Awards were held on November 6 to recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals, collaborations and partnerships, schools, and health boards in bringing Food and Fun to life for so many children and families.

The Food and Fun programme provides free, healthy meals, informal education and fun activities for children and young people during school holidays to support wellbeing and reduce holiday hunger.

Neyland Community School secured the Working Together Award, presented by Sharon Davies, Chief Officer for Education, WLGA.

The panel saw Neyland as a shining example of what can be achieved when a whole school approach is taken.

The entire team across school stages were involved working together with a shared vision to support, engage and uplift pupils during the summer break.

Having grown in numbers over the last three years, parents, carers, and pupils alike have responded with enthusiasm and gratitude for the continuity, care and enrichment provided. The impact is real, lasting and deeply appreciated by Clare Hewitt, Headteacher.

Clare said: “In our first year, we welcomed 40 pupils to take part, this rose to 60 in our second year and this summer, we were proud to be delivering the scheme to 80 pupils — including children from our newly established Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provision.

“This growth speaks volumes about the programme’s popularity and the trust our community places in it.

“Preparation begins well in advance of the summer holidays. Our dedicated team plans an exciting and varied schedule of activities designed to promote healthy lifestyles, physical wellbeing, social interaction and, of course, fun.

“Each member of staff contributes their ideas, skills and time to create a safe and welcoming environment - giving up part of their own break to ensure pupils continue to receive high-quality support.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved. The steady increase in participation, the expansion to include the LRC, and the continued support of our wider community all highlight the strength and success of this provision. Our staff have gone above and beyond, and it is only right that their dedication is recognised.”

Cllr Guy Woodham, Cabinet Member for Education and the Welsh Language said: “This award is a testament to the dedication and teamwork at Neyland Community School. The Food and Fun programme not only tackles holiday hunger but also enriches the lives of children and families across Pembrokeshire.

“Initiatives such as this show the power of collaboration in creating healthier, happier communities, and I am proud to see Neyland leading the way.

“Pembrokeshire County Council remains committed to supporting and expanding programmes like Food and Fun so that even more children can benefit in the future.”

Currently seven Pembrokeshire primary schools are part of the programme, all noting significant impact to the well-being of their pupils.
