THIS summer has seen a significant milestone for Haverfordwest in a journey that has been years in the making.

On July 17, Mayor Cllr Randell Thomas-Turner presented his 24-page strategic proposal for Haverfordwest to become the Welsh Government's national pilot for the suspension of business rates during the town’s regeneration programme.

This report was the result of 18 months’ work, following conversations with local residents, who made their views clear that business rates were one of the biggest barriers facing the town centre.

The presentation was attended by local MP Henry Tufnell, Welsh Conservative Ceredigion Penfro MS Paul Davies, County Councillor Dai Clements, Billy Shaw (representing Plaid Cymru for the MS), Deputy Mayor Cllr Adam Benson-Davies, Hedi Lewis (representing Haverfordwest Business Circle) and independent business owner Ben Evans.

The Reform Party had been invited, but no representative attended. However, the mayor said it was “incredibly encouraging to see elected representatives and members of the local business community come together to discuss a shared vision for Haverfordwest's future.”

The proposal sets out how a temporary suspension of business rates pilot could help fill empty shops and reduce vacancy rates; encourage new businesses to invest in the County Town; maximise the benefits of the ongoing regeneration programme; support entrepreneurs, protect existing businesses and create jobs.

“I’m delighted that Paul Davies MS has pledged his support, and that there is positive engagement from Plaid Cymru and Labour as we continue to build momentum behind this proposal.

But, he added: “Today wasn't the finish line—it was the start of the next chapter.

“We cannot do this alone. It will take residents, businesses, Haverfordwest Town Council, Pembrokeshire County Council, Members of the Senedd, our Member of Parliament and the Welsh Government all working together to make this vision a reality.”
