Whitland's young guns came up against a very experienced Haverfordwest team at Narberth in the inaugural final of cricket's Ken Morris Memorial Cup. After a decisive bowling spell by Mark Hicks, Harfat won the match by nine wickets. In a low scoring contest of two innings of 20 overs, Whitland were restricted to a total of 78 for 7 in the first innings. Owen Edwards scored 19, Matthew Webb 15 and Martin Thomas 12. Simon Tremaine took 3 for 15 for Haverfordwest and Matthew Vaughan 3 for 15. In reply, Haverfordwest had a lead of three runs with a total of 81 for 9. Richard Davies top scored on 20 as Gwyn Phillips took 5 for 13, backed up by Owen Edwards with 3 for 17. In the second innings, Mark Hicks ripped through the Whitland batting line-up with a match-winning spell of six for 27 and Whitland could only score 61 for 9. Hicks was supported by Simon Tremaine, who took 2 for 10. Lower order Whitland batsman Gwyn Phillips was the only person in double figures with 12. Haverfordwest cruised to a nine wickets win upon reaching a winning total of 62 for 1. Richard Davies with 25 not out and Mark Cross with 22 not out had an unbroken second wicket partnership of exactly 50. The new cup was introduced this season in memory of Ken Morris, a well-known figure in Narberth sporting circles, and his three sons Richard, Paul and Greg were present at the final with their families. Richard Morris presented commemorative medals to umpires Alan Hansen, of Neyland, and Dave Brandon, of Moylegrove, and to the scorers, Janice Webb, of Whitland, and Graham Morris, of Narberth. Paul Morris presented the runners-up medals to the Whitland team and Greg Morris presented the splendid trophy to Haverfordwest captain Alan Sexton and medals to the Haverfordwest team. Former Narberth cricketer Richard Fanus acted as adjudicator for the man-of-the-match award and chose Mark Hicks for his superb bowling in the Whitland second innings. Well-known Narberth sportsman Greg Morris spoke on behalf of the family after the match and said: "The support of everyone is very much appreciated and we would like to thank such a large crowd of spectators for turning up. The competition is for Pembrokeshire clubs with three or more teams. "The feedback from all teams involved in the competition is that they have enjoyed playing in the new cup and matches have been competitive, but played in the true spirit of cricket. "We would like to thank the Narberth club for organising the competition and we are most grateful for the time and effort put in by chairman Huw Simpkins and his wife Debbie, secretary Richard Howell and his wife Rhian and to Colin and Sheila Williams for sponsoring the trophies. "The match teas were sponsored by Narberth Rugby Club and the raffle prizes by Richard Parry, of Dyrham Service Station, Robeston Wathen." In conclusion, he said: "In view of the support that there has been from players, clubs including the County Club and the Pembrokeshire cricketing community, we can confirm that the competition will become an annual event and that the final will be staged at Narberth."
