Bonymaen Development 24 pts Narberth Ath. 37
Narberth Athletic team manager John Hodgeon said "On a perfect day for rugby Narberth Athletic took to the field with a much-changed team due to injuries, holiday commitments, work and players going off to university.
"Bonymaen soon put the Athletic under the cosh, scoring a well worked converted try in the 10th minute of the game, quickly followed by a penalty. Another converted try followed and the Athletic were finding it hard to cope under these attacks.
"One of the few times Athletic managed to penetrate the Bonymaen 20-metre area they took full advantage and scored a well-worked try from Andrew George. This was soon answered by the home team producing two more converted tries and at this stage Narberth didn't seem to have a plan of how to cope, though Rhys Davies managed to kick two penalties on the few occasions they were in the Bonymaen half - thank goodness for his trusty right boot!
"As half-time loomed, Bonymaen crossed the line again, making the half-time score 24-11.
"Strong words and a deal of wisdom from coach Mathew Davies produced a rampant Athletic after the break. It produced a try in the first minute of the second half from a forceful run by Tom Dennis, converted by Rhys Davies, quickly followed by a try from Mark Heywood, who by now was producing some aggressive running around the park, well supported by his fellow backs. The whole team had settled and were developing some very good positive rugby.
"Athletic scored again from a Rhys Davies boot, quickly followed by a Tim Plumb try.
"Athletic were now in control and an under-the-posts try from Richard Sharpe-Williams gave Rhys Davies an easy conversion kick.
"Then came the best worked try of the afternoon. From deep in the Athletic half, Tom Dennis started an attacking run. Mark Heywood took his pass on the outside as they approached the Bonymaen first line of defence, then gave the return pass to Tom Dennis. This move was repeated twice more, which left the defence totally bemused and was finished off by Mark Heywood in the corner.
"The try was converted from the touchline yet again by Rhys Davies, who kicked yet another penalty bringing the game to a close.
"A very good second half prevented Bonymaen scoring and produced positive rugby from the Athletic.
"All the squad played well, but a special mention to the two guys who took the step up from the youth, James Swain (flanker), who enjoyed the aggression, and John Edwards (prop) had a really good positive game and more than held his own against a seasoned Bonymaen prop.
"Man of the match was centre Mark Heywood."
