A traditional horse-drawn gypsy varda-caravan will be leading the way in the 'Big Jamboree' street procession on Saturday, November 1, part of the 'One World Week 2003' celebrations being held for the fourth consecutive year in Pembroke.
This nationally recognised celebration in its 25th anniversary year will have the theme of 'Moving Stories', stories about moving, stories that move us and motivate us to take action. Organisers of the event, Global Connections, have liaised with the gypsy community and consulted them on ideas for the children's workshops and the 'Big Jamboree' itself.
Throughout the week, the children of Pembroke, including some from the gypsy community, will be attending workshops, learning about global citizenship and moving stories, with the emphasis on fun.
Copies of old photographs depicting gypsy life over the last century, obtained from Scolton Manor, will be incorporated in to the thought-provoking workshops. There will also be costume-making for the procession, which the children themselves will take part in. Sand Palace Arts will be assisting and applying their artistic expertise to these workshops.
For the adults the very successful 'Fair Trade' evening will be held on Wednesday, October 29, providing some thought-provoking participatory activities run by Global Connections. Fair Trade food and wine supplied will be provided along with locally sourced produce.
There is also a Latino Dance Workshop being held mid-week that will get people in the mood for the Cuban band 'Los Yumas' playing at the Queen's Hall, Narberth, on Saturday, November 1. The latter is being put on in association with SPAN Ltd.
