To celebrate National Volunteers Week, the Gwili Railway has a Volunteer Induction Day, on Sunday, June 12, 10.30 am - 3.30 pm, at Bronywdd Arms Station, for people looking at volunteering opportunities.

The day includes an initial talk in the Victorian Tea Rooms, a visit to the signal box, a tour of the carriage and wagon department, a visit to the engineering department and, time permitting, a look at the new extension to Abergwili Junction.

Martyn Cruickshank, Gwili Railway Preservation Society chairman, who organises the induction days, commented: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the railway. Much of what is here today has been achieved through the time and commitment of volunteers over the last 35 years. People come from all walks of life and get involved in a number of ways, from operations, to carriage restoration, catering, helping with events and working in the shop or car park. If you have an interest in railway preservation, social history or like working with the public, then do get in touch.”

Tony Brown from near Crymych (pictured), volunteers in the ticket office and shop and serves on the strawberry cream tea trains.

He had this to say about volunteering at the Gwili Railway: “I began volunteering at the Gwili after attending the 50th anniversary commemoration of the last passenger train in 2015. I liked the place and had the time to offer. I love steam railways, which was the main attraction. I enjoy being with people after my years in hospitality. Anyone thinking of volunteering, I’d say do it. It’s good fun. You meet so many different people from all over the UK.”

Places are limited, so please contact the office on 01267 238213 or email [email protected] to book your place. You can also download a New Volunteer Application Form from the website.
