Pupils from Tenby's Greenhill School showed some quick thinking last week when they took flight to rescue a feathered friend from the school's playing fields.
Year Nine students Georgia Maher and Rebecca James, along with another Year 8 student, found what they thought was an injured bird on the playing field, and immediately alerted staff member Mrs. Marie Mackay.
Mrs. Mackay went with the girls and was able to identify the bird as a Manx Shearwater.
She told the girls that the bird is a nocturnal seabird that often finds it hard to take off from inland.
The bird was placed in a box and kept in a quiet place and Mrs. Mackay took the bird home. Later, when dark, she took the bird to Saundersfoot harbour where a member of the harbour personnel, Macky Brace, thought it might not be windy enough to launch the bird free.
Macky decided he would contact West Wales Bird Sanctuary who would look after the bird until weather conditions were more suitable for its release.
"The bird would certainly not have survived if it hadn't been for the quick thinking of these girls. Well done for being so caring about our wildlife," said Mrs. Mackay.
