With the Divots Winter League now having finished, congratulations go to the winner, Loz Phillips, who played some great golf over the season. Viv James sneaked into second place, while Mike (Walt) Disney, in his first year at Tenby, claimed third place. Well done to all three. The wooden spoon was won - by a single point - by the ever-popular 'Walrus', Gavin Field Thomas. He later put it down to the fact that he was unlucky that he didn't draw any decent partners during the season. Never mind, he'll be back next year! With the rigours of the league over, last weekend it was time to relax, with the Divots heading to Builth Wells and Cradoc for their annual trip. After the journey to Mid Wales, scoring on the first day was not too good, but an enjoyable time by all was had by all. Leaders after the opening round were Ken Breaker 33 pts; Nigel Ayers 32; Rob Hall 30 (back nine); Loz Phillips 30. A twos sweep was also organised, with John Stevenson, Walt Disney and Jim Moffatt claiming a three-way share of the kitty for their birdies. Nearest the pin prize winner was Rob Hall, while the longest drive was produced by Gavin 'Walrus' Field-Thomas. Day two took the players to Cradoc. It was a beautiful day and a great golf course saw some better scores returned, namely by winner on the day, Loz Phillips, who carded an excellent 37 points. He was followed home by Lawrence Lindsey with 37 and Jim Moffatt with 35. Nearest the pin was Walt Disney, while Nigel Ayers was also among the prizes as he picked up the twos sweep. And so to the final day, with four men still in with a chance of winning the overall tour title, namely Loz Phillips on 67 points, Ken Breaker and Jim Moffatt 60 and Walt Disney 59. The wooden spoon, meanwhile, was decided on a back nine countback, with Lawrence Lindsey taking the honours from John Stevenson as both finished on 78 points. Leading scores on the day were: Walt Disney 35 pts, Ken Breaker 32 (back nine) Gareth (Goa) Phillips 32. Nearest the pin was Loz Phillips, while Lawrence Lindsey produced the longest drive. It all meant that the final positions after three days of excellent golf were: 1. Mike (Walt) Disney 94 pts - congrats; 2. Loz Phillips 93; 3. Ken Breaker 93; 4. Jim Moffatt 89; 5. Nigel Ayers 84; 6. Rob Hall 81; 7. Clive Law 80; 8. Goa Phillips 80; 9. John Stevenson 78; 10. Lawrence Lindsey 78. A great time was had by all on two good golf courses, which the Divots recommend anyone to play. They also enjoyed great food at both clubs. Special thanks go to Tenby golf pro Rhys Harry for providing the prizes. Anyone looking for engraved glassware, e.g. tankards, glasses, etc., have a word with Rhys in the pro shop. All that is left for me to do is to thank the lads for a great trip and for the support I received during my year as Divots captain. Wishing everyone good luck in the upcoming cup matches.
