Age Concern Pembrokeshire has had a boost to its services. It's received a grant from Age Concern England to fund its Welfare Benefits Service.

The service not only provides information regarding benefits, but also offers assistance in the completion of the forms in a person's own home.

The service was set up in 2001 as a pilot project and has secured around £50,000 in extra income each month for older people.

Natasha Caplen, development officer, said: "Income is an important factor in being able to exercise choice and because low income and poverty related issues underlie many other difficulties we really felt it important that the service is recognised in its own right.

"The contribution being made by people over retirement age to the economy needs to be acknowledged. However, it is important that we address the fact that there are a large portion of older people entitled to but not claiming benefits. Our aim is to provide an independent, discreet and confidential service for older people."
