COLBY Gallery, near Amroth, is delighted to host an exhibition of Graham Brace's latest work, starting on Bank Holiday Monday, May 29.
Graham's distinctive Pembrokeshire scenes, worked in fine detail in coloured pencil, reflect his love of the county in which he has lived and worked for almost all of his life. Rural landscapes together with meticulously observed dry stone walls, ancient trees and moss-laden boulders are favourite subjects on dry land. Put him and his sketch pad next to water, and the results are equally arresting. Winter beaches, morning mists or sunlit harbours, usually with the focus on a solitary boat - sea shore or river bank - these are the hallmark of Brace's work. A founder member of the UK Coloured Pencil Society, Graham's method of work is painstaking and demanding, each picture worked out square inch by square inch to capture the essence of a scene as he experienced it.
However, on the plus side, it also enables him to do what he loves most - exploring his local shores and woodland on foot, in search of, hopefully, endless inspiration. This he counts as a privileged existence, following two decades of desk-bound work in his own former printing business in Haverfordwest. Now, he positively exudes is delight in living a life devoted to art.
You can capture some of this enthusiasm yourself by meeting Graham on Wednesdays, June 7 and 14, when he will be in the gallery to meet the public and discuss his work.
Another VIP visiting Colby will be Rupert Bear, who will be meeting younger visitors in the gardens on Bank Holiday Monday. Sadly Rupert can only stay for the day, whereas Graham's exhibition runs until Sunday, June 18.
It is worth mentioning that you can leave your car behind on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the Bank Holiday week, and catch the tourist bus from Tenby and outlying areas, arriving Colby at 12.30 pm, and leaving 4 pm (timetables available at Tourist Information Centres).
This is the optimum time to visit the Woodland Gardens, with the azaleas at their springtime best, so why not treat yourself to a wonderful day out? NB. There are a few spaces left on Graham Hadlow's Water Colour Workshops on Mondays, June 19 and 26 and July 3. To reserve, please ring on 01834 814200.
