TENBY YOUTH 19 pts. HAVERFORDWEST YOUTH 12

In a hard fought contest, Tenby Youth beat Haverfordwest by 19 points to 12. The game was hard and exciting, but played in excellent spirit. Sam Smith opened the scoring for Tenby after eight minutes with a strong crashing run and Aled Griffiths added the points from the conversion. Tenby had a lot of ball and when they fed the backs, scoring opportunities were there, but the 'Tenby way', much to coach Lynn's annoyance, is to attempt to go through the player and not play around him. The backline looked sharp and the forwards need to have the confidence to give them a run. Mathew Davies was given a yellow card for an 'over-enthusiastic' tackle and before Tenby could re-organise, Haverfordwest seized the advantage and romped in for a converted try. A second yellow card was issued just before the half-time whistle, this time to a Haverfordwest player. Some exchanges were made between the player and the official which led to the card being upgraded to red and Haverfordwest were down to 14 players. The score was seven points each at half-time. The second half started with a bang. The strong Tenby pack used the rolling maul well and it was a powerful forward effort that put Geoff Martin over for Tenby's second try near the posts. The kick was just wide. Haverfordwest rallied to score a well-worked try, moving the ball wide and creating an overlap, but the conversion attempt went wide and the points were equal again. Both sides had opportunities to take the lead through penalties, but it was a try by Ben Field-Thomas, converted by Rhys Thomas, that put Tenby ahead at the final whistle. The players were pleased to hear that new signing Ross Mckenzy was released from hospital after an overnight stay following a knock to the head sustained during the game. There is no game this weekend due to the Wales v New Zealand international. Training as usual, Thursday evening at 7 pm at the Clicketts.
