It’s a golden day for popular Tenby couple Sylvia and David Skyrme who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sylvia (nee Phelps) and David met when David, who was working at Vic Morris’s garage, used to pop into Sylvia’s parents’ shop at The Green.

After four years of courting, David asked Sylvia’s dad for her hand in marriage.

“He said yes, but only if we got married on a Wednesday afternoon when it was half-day closing,” said David.

The couple were married on October 11, 1967, at the Congregational Church, Tenby.

Around 100 guests attended and the ceremony was conducted by Rev. Emrys Davies.

Bridesmaids were Sylvia’s sister Ann and David’s sister Yvonne, while flower girl was Julie, a friend. Best man was David’s brother, Tony.

A reception was held at the Gower Hotel, Saundersfoot, and the couple spent a few days honeymoon with friends in Stratford-upon-Avon, before setting-up home in Kilgetty. They later moved back to Tenby and now live at the Upper Maudlins.

Sylvia and David have two daughters, Melanie and Samantha, three granddaughters Gabriella, Anya and Jasmine and grandson Lewis.

David is now retired from working as a mechanical engineer, but Sylvia still enjoys working part-time in Sainsbury’s.

When asked for their recipe for a long and happy marriage, both agreed the main ingredients were ‘working together at everything’.

The couple will be celebrating their anniversary with a family meal.
